Butts and Buts

Yesterday we went rock climbing with friends. It was an easy, silly day with gorgeous weather and enough challenges to make it interesting. As usual, most of our pictures are of people's butts.

Believe it or not, that brings me to another subject. People ask about our family life a lot. We are a gregarious family with a business and a seemingly "happy-go-lucky" attitude. Often we hear, "But, what about insurance?" "How did you save enough to start your business?" "But what about college?" "But how do you . . ." "But how can you . . ." I laughed out loud last week when a mom made a comment about our family having it "all figured out." "Are you kidding me?" I replied. We are just living life. Making plans but not KNOWING for certain anything that is around the bend.

Everyone is afraid to jump off a cliff. How do you jump into unschooling? How do you start a business? You take a picture of the "buts" for reference, and then you keep moving forward. Be honest with yourself and have the courage to do what you know is right. We all have our own comfort levels with risk. As a society, we have lost the ability to accurately assess risk (in all its forms). If you want to take a leap and a "but" is stopping you, ask yourself (honestly) what are all the possible outcomes. It might be a disaster, BUT, it might be wonderful.

Glad to see you back blogging. And wow, you have it all figured out! What a compliment that is, following your passion has really made an impression on other people around you. Facing fear is such a powerful thing to move through, you seem to have done it well.

Ha! We SOOOOO don't have it figured out! I think we're just more willing to take a chance and see what happens!
